The Town of Beausejour and the RM of Brokenhead are working collaboratively on a proposed annexation which would entail the Town annexing land from the RM.
This would accommodate the Town’s growing population, by providing land for future residential and commercial development.
A community open house was held on Tuesday, June 16, 2026 at the Brokenhead River Community Hall to introduce the project to affected landowners and the wider community. To review the materials from the open house, click HERE.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is annexation?
Annexation is a statutory process for changing the boundaries of existing municipalities. Boundaries are altered to transfer jurisdiction over land from one municipality to another.
Who approves an annexation?
The Municipal Board, an independent tribunal appointed by the Province, evaluates the proposal based six key principles and makes its recommendation to the Minister of Municipal and Northern Relations for a final decision to approve or reject the proposed annexation.
How far along is the process?
We are still relatively early in the process. An initial proposal has been filed with the Municipal Board and landowners have been notified. The Town hopes to file its final report for Provincial approval by Fall 2026.
What is the timeline for approval?
Target timelines for annexations are set out in the Province’s Annexation Handbook. The precise timing is dependent on the complexity of the proposal and timeliness of The Municipal Board’s review.
Will private property be rezoned?
The annexation will not affect existing zoning permissions on any private properties. If a landowner wishes to develop or change their use, they would have to initiate a rezoning process.
When will the annexed lands be developed?
Development will happen as market demand allows and as landowners choose to initiate it. It will likely be years before any major development occurs within the proposed annexation area.
